French Officer Killed, Several Soldiers Wounded in Iranian Drone Strike on Erbil Military Base

French President Emmanuel Macron announced early Friday that following an Islamic Republic drone attack on a military base in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan, one French officer was killed and several other soldiers were wounded. According to Macron, Senior Lieutenant Arnaud Frion of the 7th Alpine Chasseurs Battalion stationed in Varces was killed in the attack. Macron announced that the French nation stands by the soldier's family and comrades. The French President called the attack "unacceptable" and recalled that French forces have been in Iraq since 2015 as part of the international coalition against ISIS. The French army had previously stated that the drone attack occurred while troops were conducting a training exercise.
