Iran Declares 40 Days of National Mourning Following Khamenei's Death
The Iranian government officially declared 40 days of public mourning following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. State broadcaster IRIB announced his martyrdom. The 86-year-old ayatollah had ruled Iran for over 36 years. Under Iran's constitution, an interim council assumes power while the 88-member Assembly of Experts selects a new supreme leader.
