WSJ: Iran Fired Two Ballistic Missiles at Diego Garcia; One Intercepted by US Destroyer
The Wall Street Journal, citing several US officials, reports that Iran fired two medium-range ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean.
According to the report, neither missile struck the joint US-British air base. One fell into the water during its trajectory, and a US destroyer fired an SM-3 interceptor missile at the other — though it remains unclear whether the interception was successful.
There are still doubts about whether Iran possesses missiles capable of reaching Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. This British military base, frequently used by US Air Force long-range bombers, is approximately 3,800 kilometers from Iran.
Iran was previously thought to possess medium-range ballistic missiles with a range of approximately 2,000 kilometers. However, some military analysts believe the Khorramshahr missile may have a greater range. Israel's Alma Research and Education Center has assessed the range of Iran's Khorramshahr missile at up to 3,000 kilometers. This missile is said to have been developed based on a North Korean medium-range missile.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on Saturday condemned Iran's missile attacks toward Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean, while emphasizing that London has adopted a "different position from the US and Israel" in this conflict. The UK Ministry of Defense declined to comment on when the attack took place.
